Starbreaker — an Introduction
The Patch changed everything. It was promoted by governments around the world as miracle nanotechnology which would solve all mental illness and promote greater social cohesion. Businesses touted it as a productivity booster for students and workers. Religious organizations praised it as a means to aid spiritual growth. Most who believed what they had been told, and willingly accepted the Patch, died of sudden and virulent cancers which devoured their brains from within. The rest were victims of those driven mad by the Patch who retained the strength to inflict violence upon their fellows. Over the course of five years, the human population plummeted to just under a billion scattered, demoralized people whose only trust lay in themselves and their families, friends, and neighbors. They would name the apocalypse they survived 'Nationfall', for of the hundreds of nations which carved and colored the map, only two remained.
A non-government organization calling themselves the Phoenix Society rose among the survivors, offering not to govern them, but to watch over the governments they created for themselves and ensure that neither the state, nor organized religion, nor corporations could ever harm individuals again. A corps of soldier/diplomats served as the Phoenix Society's enforcement arm; they took the name hurled at them by their enemies as an insult — Adversaries — and made of it a badge of honor.
However, as during the first Renaissance, human nature remained unchanged. Despite humanity's new artistic, scientific, and social accomplishments, society retains its soft black underbelly. People still lust for wealth and power, still use others as means to their ends, and still resort to violence when gentler methods of persuasion fail. Adversaries fall prey to their own corruption or beneath the blades of those they swore to oppose. Even trusted institutions prove susceptible to decay.
In Starbreaker, the forthcoming science fantasy series from Curiosity Quills Press, a veteran Adversary loses his trust in the institution he served for a decade. He and his friends will embark upon a search for the truth behind the Phoenix Society and the society in which they live, and find themselves on the front line of a clandestine war for the future of intelligent life on Earth.
